Title: Warning Logs
Post by: ironbite on January 21, 2012, 04:19:59 pm
A forum I go to has a nice system in place where all the warnings you get are neatly displayed for the public to see.  Think we could put something like that in place here?

I've seen stuff like that on other forums. It's a good thing to have.

Why is it a good thing to have?

It's good for warned users so they can remember what they've done in the past to earn a warning. It's also good for other users to know which users are prone to breaking the rules, and therefore should be ignored.

Also helps to keep mods in check, so they know how many warnings a user has and can discipline accordingly.

Actually mods already know. We have a handy tool that tells us how many warnings and why that person has them.

As long as mods have it, then it shouldn't need to be public.

Unless the intent it to embarrass the person who has gotten the warning, then go nuts.

I actually meant to comment on the idea itself but I guess I forgot. I personally don't like publicly viewable offense records. It causes some problems on another forum I'm on. You can publicly see where a mod gives a warning in the forum, but having it follow on someone's posts or in their profile is just a scarlet letter that doesn't help anyone.

Because obviously someone that’s someone that maybe had a few warnings is a total troll that hasn’t possibly learned from said warnings?

Like Shane said, it’d just be a scarlet letter.

There IS an option to enable it for moderators and above and warned users to see said warnings... or to let everyone view it aside from the default moderators and above option.

But I don't think that's really necessary, as that'd then be a case of a scarlet letter as Shane mentioned.
