Fucking Campaign Ads
« on: October 20, 2014, 08:36:51 pm »
Seriously. Fuck 'em. People talking about Obamacare being a negative thing, not understanding how economics works (decrying both debt and raising taxes as bad things in the same ad), insinuating peole are terrorists, or at least support them, saying business is up, when its only up for the fat cats... Fuck it all. I'm so fucking done with this shit.

That's okay.  We all make mistakes.  I made almost this exact error not long ago.

From my sheltered foreign experience, America has the most disgusting toxic election adverts and campaigns in the world. There is no code of ethics or anything. Anything goes, lies, slander, attacks. It's sick. I am constantly amazed at what campaigns can get away with saying until I remember that there are really no rules concerning that kind of behavior.

Its all just turned into this mess where each party tries to break each other down instead of even trying to appeal to voters, they just try and tear everything down. Its like two bullies fighting in the mud trying to get the crowds support.

Try living next door to that shit. It infects your politics.

I see this ad all the time in my state.

"Bruce Braley supported Obamacare. Bruce Braley even supported TRIAL LAWYERS" *ominous music*

Since my dad's an attorney, that "negative" ad succesfully convinced me to vote for Braley.

Tell me about it. The incumbent senator in my state is a Democrat and a highly regarded former governor who is generally progressive. His opponent, a douchebag corporate sellout who was the head lobbyist for Enron back when that shit hit the fan, has basically done nothing but repeat "He voted with Obama! He voted for Obamacare! Therefore, he's evil and hates you!" over and over again.

Note that while he did vote for the ACA, he also thinks its flawed in some areas and wants to change it. But since that's not the same as getting rid of it entirely, he's obviously an Obama-Bot Liberal Who Hates America (tm).

And yet Republican campaign signs are all over the place, and while the local newspaper is generally supportive of the incumbent most of the letters to it on the issue are, again, attacks against him for supporting Obamacare (which allegedly denies people health coverage).

I don't even get it. The people who hate ACA are most likely on the republican's side.

It doesn't help that majority of the negative ads don't even say who were supposed to vote for, just against.

Negative ads are all over the place because they work. Why compromise your campaign with a less effective ad?

I don't even get it. The people who hate ACA are most likely on the republican's side.

Most of them, sure. Many progressives don't like it either because it was an obvious capitulation to the health insurance companies when we could have implemented a far simpler and more effective fix like Medicare for all.
Consumption is not a politically combative act — refraining from consumption even less so.

But if you offer a Democraticaristocatical candidate who ALSO happens to hate ACA then they might vote for Democrats rather than Republicans.
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:

To be fair, the Republican candidate has been targeted by a lot of vicious attack ads. However, considering he was Enron's head lobbyist back in the day, I'd say he kind of brought it on himself.

I guess I'd still prefer if the incumbent explained himself better rather than beating a dead horse on the Enron scandal, but (to quote some old FSTDT commentary) can you really blame the shark when you jump into its tank wearing a brand new fish gut swimsuit?
