I had a German professor from Cologne who said that the way JFK was using "Berliner" (as a non-citizen) made it gramatically correct in the German language because he wasn't literally using it as an adjective but a metaphor for unity. As Snopes put it, it's no more incorrect than someone from New York saying that they're a "New Yorker". It's most comparable to statements like "We are all Americans today" after 9/11. Using "ein" allowed him to speak in a figurative sense, as simply saying "Ich bin Berliner" would have been saying "I am from Berlin."

Either way, the doughnut isn't even called a "Berliner" in the whole country.

Nah, it isn't entirely incorrect. As for the 'it isn't even called so-and-so in the whole country' I would hope so. It's like pop and soda in the US.

My most disappointment came from the fact not everyone eats pretzels for breakfast in Germany. It's only in some parts. Lucky for me I was staying with someone who came from that part. :D

...Nein? I dunno how you got that. I was saying it wasn't entirely incorrect when it came to the grammar of the sentence 'ich bin ein berliner'. You wouldn't get marked wrong if you wrote it down during beginner lessons of German. I am after all the one who even confirmed the jelly donut part.

I often amuse myself with adding certain articles to sentences. While I would introduce myself in Germany as 'Ich bin Amerikaner' my brain often defaults to 'ich bin ein Amerikaner.'
