Over 30 states wanting to secede!!!!!!!!!!!omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
« on: November 13, 2012, 04:37:05 pm »
More like people from a bunch of different states decided to make petitions to secede.
You've all probably been bombarded with this shit lately in the news, but I'm getting kind of annoyed with people taking this all seriously? Like, this is less than 1% of the US population we're talking here. 22,000 people signing a petition in ANY state will not lead them to BREAK AWAY FROM THE ENTIRE NATION. This seems like a really futile effort that's getting way too much media attention. Thoughts?

I listen in to it for the glorious Schadenfreud of when their little bubble breaks, leaving them realizing they really are utterly powerless.

The reactions I get over this "news" is funniest on Facebook, though it scares me that I've run into people who are taking this idea seriously.

For one, the entire plan, assuming this is a serious secession movement and not just an interesting way of getting government's attention, assumes that the majority of the state agrees with whichever Billy Bob submitted the petition in the first place. As has been stated repeatedly, this is far from the case, and will likely remain so throughout this ordeal for each and every petition that's been created.
Two, many of these states, as has also been discussed elsewhere on the boards, are completely incapable of sustaining themselves on their own economies. Texas and California might be able to, but Cali owes too much in debt and Texas... well, they don't exactly have a history of brilliant politicians. The infrastructure may be there, but I'm almost positive the sudden loss of emergency services, military bases and equipment, and federal subsidies for the farmland and oil industries Texas in particular loves to boast will take it's toll faster than the secessionists have considered.
Third: let's assume that, for whatever reason, Texas (to use the most viable and popular example) is simply let go by the federal government. What happens to all the government infrastructure that's left in Texas? Presumably, the military and any emergency service systems will leave, and the border crossings will be abandoned. What happens to the remaining infrastructure? Will Texas have to purchase the bases, facilities, and even interstates from the US (which I sincerely doubt they'd be able to do all at once)? And, if they can't or won't, how long will Texas tolerate, say, armed forces remaining within their borders like some kind of occupation?
Fourth: What kind of foreign policy plans will Texas enact? I doubt the people submitting these recession petitions care a whole lot for "outsiders", so I can't see them putting up with much in the way of immigration, or even being all that tolerant of trade agreements and foreign embassies. Hell, what are they going to do to fill up the vacuum left by people leaving Texas because they'd rather be in America? By my understanding, such a move would nearly empty out all the major cities.

This entire thing is a poorly thought out plan, implemented by whiny man-children who are upset that there's still a black muslim socialist in the white house, nothing more.

Cali owes too much in debt

If California seceded, their budget would balance overnight. They pay A lOT of federal taxes, and get very little in federal spending. If Alabama seceded, sudden bankruptcy.

These petitions are incredibly silly and I wish the mainstream media would stop giving attention to them.  I highly doubt that even most Romney supporters would want to secede.

California receives 78 cents in spending for every dollar of federal taxes. Presuming that they kept tax rates the same, that's debt reduction of 22 cents for every dollar of federal taxes they pay- and they pay a LOT of federal taxes. In 2008 (the height of the crisis) their budget deficit was $26.3 billion, according to wikipedia. That's about 1.3% of GSP. Now, I can't be bothered finding how much California pays in federal taxes, but I bet one quarter of that number is more than 1.3% of GSP.

Alabama has the opposite problem. As a conservative society, it's highly un-innovative, also poor. For every dollar of federal income taxes it pays, it receives $1.66 from the Feds. You see the problem. Take away the .66 dollars of Federal welfare, and the society is bankrupt.

Update: Some beautiful genius made a response petition: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/deport-everyone-signed-petition-withdraw-their-state-united-states-america/dmQl1bXL

Now I wonder how many people will take this seriously.

Need a head start? Going with Wikipedia's admittedly slightly out-of-date numbers, California's GSP is roughly $1.9 trillion, or a little over 13% of the nation's GDP, as of 2008. As of 2010, this equates to the 9th largest economy in the world. The economy itself is broken down as such:

You can even find the official state budget here, which, if I'm doing the numbers right (and I'm almost positive I'm not; someone who's good at math should correct me), comes to around $284 million for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Further adding to the odds of California being able to survive on it's own, is the fact that our science scores are highest in the nation, which I imagine would become more the norm if sovereignty had a positive effect on the state's education system. Between that and the fact that California has a considerable amount of its GSP concentrated in domestic tech/R&D and shipping & commerce, and there may in fact be a good case to be made for California to be viable on it's own.

ETA: that deport all secessionists petition is amazing. Let's do it.

I signed...that was fun! Don't worry, anybody who signed a secession petition for fun...OR to help "get rid" of 'em.

Secession during the Civil War was handled by a majority vote in the seceding states' legislatures and approval by their governors, then the federal reps and senators declared secession in Congress. These petitions are just a fun way to watch people cry waaaaaaaaaaa. And looking at the signers? Most of them are not residents of the particular states these petitions are for, which would make a REAL petition invalid, anyway.
