Jesus inspiring the founding fathers? Even if I was Christian still, I would think this was a funny joke.
The material needs a defender more than the spiritual. If there is a higher power, it can defend itself from the material. Thus denotes 'higher power'.

Jefferson actually thought Jesus was a great teacher.

He didn't believe that Jesus was in anyway supernatural, but he thought that a lot of the lessons taught by Jesus were worth listening to.  Hence his editing of the bible to remove the supernatural elements and leave the historical and moral lessons.
