This is also the Year of the Raisin-Oatmeal cookie, but no one really expects a surge in their popularity.

If I could afford them, I'd take 100 boxes just because of this statement alone. :P

WTF? Why are they doing this? Isn't this in clear violation of the Constitution? Also notice how these same people are the same ones that scream that the Constitution is being violated when lawmakers pass something that goes against their beliefs yet when these same people pull ridiculous shit like this they have no problem and say that it is within the Constitution under the First Amendment rule and will scream and shout if it gets overruled by a higher court.

Fucking hypocrites.

A quick Google search reveals that Ronnie (who else?) did it first in 1983. This new law seems to be a copypasta of the older one.

Did they specify which Bible?

King James?  Gnostic?  OT?  NT?  Tao Te Ching?  Vedas?  Satanic?

They probably mean King James. I just wonder what they would do if people declared that if this year is the year of the Bible, then next year must be the year of the Koran.

Oh, I can only assume there would be protests, which would be the highlight of FOX News' day... there would also be people threatening to burn Korans, people bitching about religious persecution, a rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes... you know, everything good Christians are expected to do for Jeezus.

And that's the thing, isn't it? It's ALWAYS something Christian. Where's the resolution proposing it to be the year of the atheist? The year of the Wiccan? How the Hell can anyone sit here & tell me this is not an official endorsement of a selected religion? And while they might think the resolution itself is "no big deal," which of course they wouldn't be saying if it was about endorsing something "politically correct," it's still a waste & a very bad precedent to set.

We just talked about this today in my cultural geography class.  This falls under folk geography, and basically, people are uncomfortable with stuff they don't agree with.  Folk geography historically deals with rural people, tradition, and conservatism.  Politically, this is why, even with the separation of church and state, we've only had one president who isn't protestant, secularism is looked down on, etc.

There's a difference between being uncomfortable with other beliefs & outright endorsing your own. Put simply, there's no way you can not know you're pushing state religion when you're making legal declarations about your religion. Your example can be an unconscious bias.

^Yes, but people want their beliefs to be the ones on top.  This is clearly a move to appeal to those that take the Bible literally, and they probably don't see anything wrong with this, because in their minds, they are right.  If they do see something wrong, then this might be an attempt to play the victim and claim to be persecuted when this ends up getting shot down.

Those that are for this are uncomfortable with the idea of secularism, and having 2012 be the year of the bible would make them feel safe with their beliefs when it comes to religion and country.

Part of me is curious if people are proposing and supporting this because they think if they make this "the year of the Bible" that God won't end the world.

I figured that, but it isn't mentioned specifically.  Therefore, I'd love to see people agree to this but promote a completely different book.  Hey, freedom of religion!
