Whovians, unite and freak out!

Seriously though, that's pretty frickin' awesome. I'm not a fan of how up-in-the-air the presence/absence of water is, but I'm excited to find learn more.

And the possibility of there being life on Mars just went up another notch.

If confirmed, this potential find would be incredible.  With all the recent discoveries on Mars, I can't wait until they confirm they have found life, or at least, former life, there. I want to know there is or has been life somewhere other than on this rock.  The implications would be staggering.

Holy mother of god. I hope more than anything that there is or has been life on Mars, because holy shit, why wouldn't you? The entire scientist/geek population of the Earth will have some kind of nerd critical mass aneurysm if it turns out that there has been life on Mars. Never mind flowing water.

Though I would be interested to see how various faiths/religions and their leaders would react to the revelation that life can exist somewhere other than Earth.

That might be true for some religions, but for others, it wouldn't be as big a deal.  For instance, the Catholic Church is open to the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Some religious groups have discussed the possibility, and come to the conclusion that their first priority should be to send missionaries  ::)

I'm reminded of the scene in Religulous where Bill Maher interviewed the head of the Vatican astronomy lab, who joked that his job was not to "Find the aliens before the Mormons get to them".
Excuse me, sir, do you have a minute to talk about your lord and savior, Hannibal Barca?

send missionaries

I don't know if there are words to describe how quickly and in how many ways that could go wrong.
