American History

Does anyone know of a good book about the history of the Americas before the European apocalypse? I'm working on a history book and I don't want to neglect two whole continents just because their history isn't as well-documented as the Old World's.

Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States spends a little time talking about pre-European America, but there isn't much.

My dad has this book and documentary series which covers the pre- and post-conquest Native Americans pretty well.

500 Nations is good, but if I remember right, it's almost all post-Columbus.

Well, the problem is that apart from the Mayans, the Native Americans didn't have a whole lot of written culture or literature.

Sure, some of them had some pretty decent artwork and architecture (the Incas, the Mesoamerican cultures, and a few of the Eastern Woodlands and Southwestern tribes especially), but Western cultures are predominantly literary cultures and without written records, a lot of stuff is presumed to be lost.

1491 is worth a read. Written by a journalist so it's well written, and not boring as history writing can be at times. It is also very well researched, with a large biblography

Right.  Technically prehistory didn't end in the Western Hemisphere until Europeans arrived, given that very few, if any, Native American peoples actually recorded their history.  But he's looking for information from before contact.
