Let's hope this is a sign of better things for Saudi Arabia.

Yes, Saudi Arabia has taken another baby step toward modernity, and silenced and then locked up the people who forced them into it.
Saudi Arabia (and Israel) are proof that you can get away with the most heinous and egregious abuses, atrocities, and genocides if you're a US ally (or, rather, if for geopolitical reasons the US has to suck your dick).

oh, and they're still trying to literally force Yemen into the sea

With US help.

And it's not just the U.S. either. Saudi Arabia was elected to serve on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/05/03/saudi-arabia-where-women-arent-allowed-to-drive-was-just-elected-to-the-u-n-womens-rights-commission/?utm_term=.7f5e5269cfba). Imagine if Apartheid-era South Africa was on the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Basically because the US put them there, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was because of some backroom whispers that the Saudis would stop selling their oil in US dollars if they weren't let onto said committee (I think they may actually have chaired it at some point).
But basically Saudi Arabia and Israel have the US by the balls in their own ways and it produces seriously disgusting results.

Israel's got its problems with how they treat Palestinians, but I honestly prefer them over the Saudis because at least Israel is much better for women and LGBT people.
