Title: "it's not a Religion it's a relationship" and other religious bullshit.
Post by: rageaholic on April 30, 2013, 04:14:10 pm
It's such a tired old cliché.  Every time someone posts something critical of Christianity, some "True Believer" has to pipe up claiming that those other churches are false and that they somehow possess the one true faith.  Oh but they're not religious, they have a personal relationship with god.   ::)  Dude, if you think you have a personal relationship with God, then you're not just religious, you're nuts.  It's one thing to believe in God, but it's another to claim to know God personally and to speak on his behalf.

And don't act like you're different from all the other churches.  Everyone all claims to have the "Truth", but in the end, it's the same message, you're a worthless sinner saved by grace.  Speaking of which, that's an insulting message.  God loved us so much that he had Jesus killed so he wouldn't have to kill us.  Such a touching story, expect it's not.  Because according to fundie theology, most of humanity is already going to hell anyway.  Why did god even half to kill someone anyway?  Us mere mortals can come up with better concepts of "justice" than that so surely an all powerful God can too.
As I should have said in a disclaimer, this isn’t directed at all Christians.  I know personally that not all Christians act like that.  But when people share such nutty, barbaric believes an act like there’s nothing wrong with them, I get very frustrated.

It's another way of saying "my religion > yours"

My brother is actually in the middle of an online debate with someone who believes this. His reasoning is that religions are man-made institutions that force you to follow a specific set of rules. Nothing can convince this man that Christianity is indeed a religion.

Because Christianity is totally not man-made

Hell, Christianity is man-made by its own canon. Jesus was supposedly "fully God and fully human".

A relationship with god? I think I'll leave this here : http://atheism.about.com/od/whatisgod/p/AbuserAbusive.htm (http://atheism.about.com/od/whatisgod/p/AbuserAbusive.htm)

I'm pretty sure that I first found this link on this very forum. Well, the one that was before this one.

Quite frankly, the person your brother is debating simply doesn't know, or isn't willing to use, the proper definition of "religion". Which Christianity fits in every detail.

Of course, it's most likely the latter of those two options, as insisting that Christianity isn't a religion is simply a method of trying to set their own silly beliefs apart from the different silly beliefs of others.

For shits & giggles, I say have your brother inform this person that if Christianity is not a religion, then its practice has no protections under US law.
