AIDS denialism

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/blog/2012/feb/21/death-denial-hiv-aids

Apparently this exists. People who are HIV-positive but choose not to take any drugs to control the symptoms. And as detailed, the consequences can be dire.

Quote
Karri Stokely is a poster girl for a different way to look at health. After receiving an Aids diagnosis in 1996, at the age of 29, she was treated for 11 years with a cocktail of drugs. But then she saw an internet video saying that HIV was a hoax, stopped taking her medicines – and felt terrific.

"I'm not getting any answers from the mainstream as to why I'm healthy, and why my husband is negative, and why I can quit these drugs," she explains in her own video, which is currently being promoted online. "I think it's a crime. It's crimes against humanity."

Her doctor was aghast – HIV treatment is for life. "He looked me right in the eyes and said: 'You have done a very stupid thing, and you will be dead very soon,'" Stokely recalls. "My response to him was: 'That's funny, because right now I'm feeling pretty good.'"

That was in April 2007. She died four years later, so her comments are a postcard from the past. "Karri Stokely passed away on April 27th 2011," explains a website run by London journalist Joan Shenton. "She said she wouldn't go quietly so we are keeping her moving interview below on our homepage."

The whole thing is worth a read, as well as the fact there are websites dedicated to this kind of idiocy. The defining characteristic among most AIDS sufferers who stopped taking drugs is they usually die, within a few years. But even if their death occurs after years of not taking medicine, the advocates still somehow blame it back on the drugs.

As a bonus, go halfway past down the comments for the usual cries of "pharma shill".

The Darwin Award has been won. Frankly, I'm amazed she lasted as long as she did.

AIDS Denialists are ultimately a recruitment group with conspiracy fringes, they prey on those terrified of what will happen to them because of being infected with HIV because of it still being seen as so much of a death sentence compared to many who still live fufilling lives while being infected.  They want to make you believe that there are ways to beat it outside modern medicine, that it really doesn't exist,  or that "big pharma" is hiding the cure and that they know it.

To say a person is stupid because they fall for this is not right, they are a victim of fear and uncertainly and ultimately pay the price.

I usually don't like to speak ill of the dead, but that woman was an idiot and deserves a Darwin Award. (But if she has children, then she's automatically disqualified...)

What I find astonishing is that every single person with HIV/AIDS that loudly promotes this crap is or soon will be dead, and yet their "movement" still has followers! For God's sake, how much proof is needed that they are wrong?

I think there's a subset of AIDS denialists (or heck, maybe most of them) who think AIDS was invented by the U.S. government or something as a biological weapon. If I remember correctly, Alex Jones promotes that bullshit on his show. They refuse to get treatment for it because it will "feed the Big Pharma machine."

Perhaps their version of AIDS is Acquired Intelligence Deficiency Syndrome?

I generally stop taking anyone seriously whenever they first mention "Big Pharma".

Indeed. "Big _____" has much the same rhetorical effect as "The Secret Society of Super Villians: _____ Division".

Well their usual excuses are:

a) It wasn't AIDS that killed him it was just something that looks like it. (Usually they either blame drugs or gay-sex.)
b) Well he took some HIV medication at some point and that is what causes AIDS, as long as you stay away from "medicine" HIV is harmless.
c) Well I suppose your "research" and "evidence" looks convincing but WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?! (Runs away.)
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!
