“Pirating” UK Student to be Extradited to the US
« on: March 22, 2012, 02:05:27 pm »
Richard O’Dwyer, the UK-based ex-administrator of the video linking website TVShack will be extradited to the US to face copyright infringement charges. Despite public outrage Home Secretary Theresa May approved the extradition order today. The 23-year-old student has never visited United States, but now faces several years in a US prison.

Last year Richard O’Dwyer was arrested by police for operating TVShack, a website that carried links to copyrighted TV-shows.

Following his detention in the UK’s largest prison, the site owner fought a looming extradition to the US, but without success.

After a UK judge gave the green light to extradite the student two months ago, Home Secretary Theresa May officially approved the request from US authorities today.

Wow. That is pretty harsh considering he didn't even have any stuff in his possession or stuff on a hard drive, just links to other websites.  I don't think this looks good on either the UK or the US imo.  By the way isn't it crazy that America can push its' laws onto other countries, I thought the UK was sovereign nation or am I mistaken now?

To be fair, we're talking about a UK government that's essentially given up things like "appealing to the voters" and "keeping the media onside".

We have a stupidly unbalanced extradition treaty with the US.

I am no longer worried about being invaded.

I am now worried about being the invader.

Seriously, though, why the fuck can't America keeps its greasy tentacles out of other countries?

The US has stupid extradition treaties with various countries. Basically, they refuse to let any of their own citizens be extradited, but get extremely pissy if any country refuses to deport one of its own citizens.

It's a nightmare for British citizens because it's very difficult to get out of it, and US sentences are often draconian compared with those in the UK.

In 2002 an Autistic British man was caught hacking into the US military and NASA servers, bringing down a Washington office and a US Naval base for 24 hours. He was looking for evidence of alien encounters. He has been fighting extradition ever since and, if convicted, faces 70 YEARS in prison. Bearing in mind the longest hacking sentence handed down in the UK is 2 years and only 23 people have ever received whole life sentences for anything in modern times.

He's facing the same sentence as particularly heinous serial killers like the Wests or the Moors Murderers did in the UK

They can't extradite Roman Polanski for child rape, but they can extradite a man for copyright infringement?

I know we're talking two different countries here, but still.

There's plenty of high-functioning autistic people out there.  They're not all Chrischan.

Weren't all the prisons privatized in the late 70s? Hmm.
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

No.  Only about 10% of prisons are privatized.  Still a big problem, though.  http://www.correctionsproject.com/corrections/pris_priv.htm

Murder someone in cold blood and you can be out in a couple years if the judge is particularly lenient that day.  But if you cost a company to draw less than their calculated maximum profit, they'll go for blood, and you MIGHT get out before you die of old age.  Because corporations are people with all the privileges and none of the restrictions, and money is far more important than human life.  After all, prisons are such a profitable business themselves.

Congratulations.  You found Ronald Reagan. He’s living in each and every one of you.  Just waiting to gnaw his way out of your chest and skitter off into the ventilation ducts.
