Title: The marriage equality thread
Post by: gyeonghwa on January 04, 2012, 04:44:31 pm
It thought it would be easier to consolidate news about ssm into one thread:

For news right now, marriage equality will likely come to Quintana Roo (http://mexico.cnn.com/nacional/2011/11/30/sin-hacer-una-reforma-legal-quintana-roo-realiza-sus-primeras-bodas-gay), in Southeastern Mexico. Which means gay weddings in Cancun during spring break (if you don't die in one of them Mayan cenotes trying pull off a drunken stunt.)

There is increasing pressure to introduce a marriage bill in Washington (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politicsnorthwest/2017157564_gregoire_to_introduce_gay_marr.html). As of right now, only the Saqaumish tribe recognize same sex marriage in Washington. I'd like to note that the Northwest Natives seems to be more progressive in LGBT rights, probably stemming from less exposure for evangelism. In any case, many other tribes probably would follow suit, especially with the rise of the third gender movement (which is a good thing  :D ).

There is increase pressure by NOM affiliates to ban SSM in New Hampshire (http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2011/12/today-in-anti-gay-scare-tactics.html). However there is a bipartisan movement to stop it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UZaMPgRuM68) North Carolina is trying to amend their constitution to stop SSM (http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2011/12/gay-snipers-will-shoot-newlyweds.html).

Dear God, with the amounts of link I just posted, even I would think I was a spambot.

UPDATES! :)

Maryland will consider a marriage equality bill as well as a bill to protect transgender right. (http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2012/01/maryland-legislature-to-consider-gay-marriage-transgender-rights-bills)

Again we find that DOMA does not protect marriages. (http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2012/01/san-francisco-binational-gay-couple-elated-over-deferred-deportation) Where as straight couples don't risk deportation, gay couples do since they aren't protected by federal laws.

In the process of it's spectacular fail and shift to the far right, Hungary outlaws LGBT rights in it's constitution. (http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2012/01/anti-lgbt-constitution-family-protection-law-in-hungary-come-into-force)

The WA state governorr supports a same-sex marriage law. It's a step up from "civil unions." http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/05/us-gaymarriage-governor-washington-idUSTRE80407G20120105 (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/05/us-gaymarriage-governor-washington-idUSTRE80407G20120105)

And she's not running for reelection, so she'll hopefully have the time to actually get it done - or at least lay the groundwork for Jay Inslee to finish it if he wins.

Knew there was a reason I voted for her!

As of the first day of this year, my home state of Delaware now allows same-sex civil unions.

Please sign this petition (http://www.change.org/petitions/new-hampshire-state-legislators-dont-repeal-the-freedom-to-marry). I know it will probably do jack shit but I'd at least like to try something, especially since New Hampshire's bill would also legalize discrimination based on orientation.

I signed it. Yup it allows sex based discrimination and those fuckwits at NOM wants that.

New Jersey will vote on a marriage bill on Wednesday. Gov. Chris Christie has vowed to refuse to sign it.  (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/01/nj_legislature_to_introduce_ga.html)

NH may repeal marriage equality next week! (http://www.joemygod.blogspot.com/2012/01/nh-repeal-vote-may-be-next-week.html)

WA, however, is looking positive in it's marriage aspect. (http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/AP-Gay-marriage-within-reach-in-Wash-Legislature-2471287.php) NJ, likewise, have already filled the bill!

NOM continues to waste money on hate:

Finally, the kicker: WTF Canucks?! How can you allow this:

Is there a petition trying to ban ALL discrimination laws since over half of the states have them.

My Facebook news feed has practically exploded because of that story. Fortunately, it sounds like it may just be media sensationalism:

http://www.freedomtomarry.org/press/press-release/lgbt-legal-groups-canadian-marriages-of-same-sex-couples-are-not-in-jeopard

As far as I can tell, it's all conjecture stemming from the position taken by a single government lawyer in one divorce case. I can't find anything suggesting that the government is actually trying to invalidate numerous marriages, nor that this one lawyer's stance is reflective of the government as a whole.

Which isn't to suggest that this isn't something we should keep an eye on, just that some of the conclusions being drawn are rather presumptive and premature.

I read about a study today from the UCLA Williams Institute that said that teenage children of lesbian couples are just as happy and well adjusted as teens of hetero couples.

Not a shock to anyone here, I know.

Not a shock to anyone here, I know.

Also not a shock, but still undesirable, children of same sex male couples couldn't be included in the study because they were so rare.
