In India, a snake protects two pups for 48 hours after they accidentally fall into a hole. At first it was thought that she wanted to attack them, but then noticed she was caring for the puppies. When rescued, the snake was released into a forest.

Just thought a little heartwarming could be useful right now.

Also, some related images are in the tumblr link.

When I saw this story's title, why is the first thing I thought that it was about this guy?

A limerick:

There once was a unicorn who would shove
His rainbows around like a dove
"Always I'll be with you
And then make-believe with you
Harmony, Harmony, oh love"

It would be more confusing if you DIDN'T think of him.
Still can't think of a signature a year later.

I don't think TV Tropes allows direct linking, Jack

Reptiles really shouldn't be capable of anything beyond instinctive behaviour. They're certainly incapable of forming "friendships" or any other sort of emotional bonds.

Do you have a better source than Tumblr? Assuming this is true, I'd be very interested to know what was going on with that snake.

For that matter, most reptiles don't have anything akin to paternal instincts. Snakes do not raise their young. When you see stories like "tiger raises puppy as her own", it's unusual, but understandable under certain circumstances.

But a snake... if this is true, it's quite an incredible story.

Reminds me of a heartwarming story I heard like it.

A crocodile attacked a baby gazelle on land, and a hippo went after the croc. The people filming thought the hippo was stealing an easy snack from the croc, but the hippo started nudging the baby gazelle with its nose. The hippo stayed with the gazelle until it sadly died.

Of course, after the hippo left the croc went and got his meal back.

So in effect, the hippo just prolonged the gazelle's death.

Actually snakes can bond. There's a reason why if you handle them a lot they get less bitey and are more comfortable riding on your neck.

Whereas if you neglect them more and more they "hate" you more and tend to get snappy.

They pick up your scent, can recognize different ones and therefore know it's you and not your neighbor.

Though we can't figure out what the snake was thinking by 'protecting' the pups and whether it was true protection is something else entirely. I also dunno a thing about cobras but I know a thing or two about garters and pythons which I used above.

That snake demonstrated more empathy than a number of people so far. This worries me greatly.
Despite knowing about indoctrination I thought it was a good idea to put a human Reaper near my office. Now I am a sentient husk :(.
