Papercraft Thread
« on: June 04, 2012, 12:28:03 am »
In the last few months I've gotten into doing papercraft. All the models I've done are by other people. Most come in the form of either a pdf file or a Pepekura(a software used for making and viewing papercraft models) file. I print it on card stock with a regular printer. I categorize models into two categories, closed and open. Closed are ones that have a sealed hollow area on the inside of it, like a box. An open model is one that has a large opening or no real "inside", like a helmet or mask respectively.

Here is a recent project I finished.

The model was from a set of masks worn by the splicer enemies in the game Bioshock. The original model had feathers around the edges of the mask, which I left off. What my intention was was to make a plague doctor mask(see Deimos avatar for an example). Like almost all of the model I do I print it in plain, untextured, white. This is both to save ink and because it's easier to see the fold lines. When I finish a few more I will take all of them and reinforce them with fiberglass and resin. I'm then going to custom paint them.

Here is my current work in progress. This one is a Dragon Priest mask from Skyrim.

Here are my tools. There are scissors, two X-acto knives, and glue. The knives are actually different. The one with the custom camo tape wrapped handle is a regular knife used for cutting things that aren't easy for the scissors to get. The bare knife has a blade I rounded by rubbing it on a sharpening stone the worst way possible. The reason for this is so I can use it to crease the card stock before folding it to make it easier. I also use it to apply glue to areas the glue stick can't get to on a semi-complete model or manipulate parts inside a closed model that I can't reach with my finger.

Here is the piece of cardboard I use over my laptop when working on papercraft(I usually watch YouTube videos while working). It's to prevent the knife from damaging the laptop and lap-desk. This one is almost worn out (both sides), and will soon be replaced with a fresh piece cut from boxes that would otherwise be trash. I find it also makes a nice background for pictures.

Here are some future projects that are recently printed. The printer causes the card stock to get curved, which I fix by letting printed pages sit under some flat heavy objects, which during the school year was a stack of text books. ;D

I have many half finished projects. All of my "closed" models are unfinished with at least one piece left off for now so I can later add some kind of filler before resining and painting them. I'm not sure what to use as filler. My idea is some kind of expanding foam, though I don't know what kind, where to get it, and so on. I haven't yet fiberglassed any models yet, I'm waiting to get a few models so they can all be done at once. I'm aware of the dangers and such of the fumes involved when using resin. My dad has been working on a fiberglass body hot rod so they materials are readily available.

I have MANY files from all kinds of games, movies, and original works. I can put the collection up for download if anyone is interested.

I wish I had wrote down who made all the models I have so I could give proper credit. I'll try to track them down in the future. If you want to find the models they can likely be found by Google searching "papercraft (insert object)". I appreciate the efforts of all the model creators and that the put them up for free download on the internet. If your model if here I want to thank you. I don't want anyone to think I'm taking credit for any of these models, they aren't mine, though I want to make some of my own in the future.

I would love to hear your comments, criticisms and suggestions. More pictures of other models to come in the near future.

Holy crap that mask looks good. Are you planning to go to any masquerade parties? Also, I think some of your pictures are missing (the future projects ones). How long does it take to make one?

I don't plan on going to any parties with it, though I might wear it if I ever go to comic con or similar event. I might also wear it if I take part in public protesting at some point in the future, as a form of psychological warfare and to hide my identity. Fixed the picture. I takes a couple hours to make the plague doctor mask depending on how good you are and if your not watch videos while doing it. It is only three seperate pieces, more if you add the "feathers" it was originally intended to have.

Making one is relatively easy. Here's what the links to the mask files and the software needed to open them, as well as a crash course in papercraft.

Mask file(it's the one in the folder named "bird mask"): http://paperkraft.blogspot.com/2008/11/bioshock-papercraft-splicer-mask.html

Pepakura software: http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/

Here's what it looks like opened in the Pepakura Viewer.

Texture on

Texture off

These masks are different from most in that the file contains two masks, one for the outside texture, one for the inner. The two are meant to be glued together to form one mask. Since I don't need the texture I only printed one of the sets. If your leaving out the feathers then you only need to print pages 3-5. Texture is toggled on and off in the settings menu at the top.

Once printed you need to cut it out along the solid lines. I then use the dull knife to crease the fold lines but this is necessary. The dashed line show were to make a mountain fold, and the dash and dot lines show were to make a valley fold. Once the folding is done it's time to glue it together. You can go into view and turn on "Show Edge ID" and it will show number along the edges(you can do this before printing and it will show on the paper). Each number matches up to the same number were it is supposed to be glued. Apply glue to the tabs and attach it on the underside of the corresponding area. Since the feathers are left off there will be some unused tabs on the back edge. These can be cut off.

I'm sure I probably left something out of that so if you need clarification feel free to ask.

Well I'm finally getting around to updating this thread. How does this thread have 400+ views and only 4 comments as of me posting this?

Here's the finished Dragon Priest mask. (Well I still need to add the eye pieces and resin coat it.)

Here's the first model that I designed completely myself using Google Sketchup and Pepakura Designer.

I'm going to try to post pictures of some of my other finished models tomorrow.

That's a whole heap of cool beans.

I've always wanted to try papercraft, but I haven't. I found a design for one of those eye switches from Zelda that I wanted to make. Would be neat to hang one over my door.

Could you possibly do a Psycho mask from Borderlands?

In response to the person that messaged me, yes, I do still have the files. If you can tell me how to get them to you I'd be more than happy to give them to you. I can't respond to your PM as it appears your not a member of the site.

It's actually not that hard. I recommend using card paper instead of regular paper though as it makes it much easier and the end result is more durable.

Yes, I can actually. I recently downloaded a file for the borderlands mask in fact. It might be a while until I do it though, I'm currently working on a model of the helmet worn by Guy Manuel of Daft Punk.

This stuff is awesome, love the dragon priest mask, do you colour them?
I felt that British spelling of color was more appropriate for some reason.

I'll be coloring them after I get around to resin and fiberglass coating them. That probably won't be until after the Daft Punk helmet is done though.
