Yes, you read it right. One of NOM's collaborators, Ken Hutcherson, who is a pastor at a Seattle-area church thinks good parents should beat the gay out of their kids.
There is no evidence at all that the homosexual was born that way. I guarantee you I was. I was born this way. I was born black, I’m living black, I’m going to die black.
You know we find out there’re criminal genes, they say, in some people. But do you know how to get rid of criminal gene? Two parents with a belt [laughs] gets rid of the criminal gene.
Discipline, understanding, good parenting removes the homosexual gene

Seriously, WTF is wrong with these people?? >:(
-
Never mind the fact that a lot of actual criminals did come from abusive parents.

^^^^^
Also fuck NOM. It's bad enough they're now putting adds in the Middle East where they'd know gay people are targeted for violence.
-
Is this guy from Mars Hill Church? Because you mentioned a nutty Seattle-area church, and I think that might be the one. They've also said that yoga is demonic and that psychiatric medications are a "crutch."
-
Comparing homosexuals to criminals? Advocated child abuse? Sounds like a conservative.
Fuck this guy.
-
I... I don't even have an image to describe my reaction to this shit. And this group has serious political power!? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY!? This surprises me, but really it shouldn't, I've heard violent and hateful stuff like this before. Maybe it's because it's a group with actual influence, not a couple lone nutters. I... words don't even... uh... I... I think I'll try to post a better response tomorrow.
-
Can this guy get his ass legally handed to him for advocating violence? I mean, this is pretty obvious, innit?

I don't think so. There are quite a few people who published parenting books advocating that people beat their child, and I don't think anything happened to them. I think they were also quoted on the main page a few times. Oh and there's this shit (http://fstdt.com/QuoteComment.aspx?QID=67487).
-
Motherfucker...
-
I have a serious urge to show up at this guy's church and punch him in the face. Wykked, you want to come?

I'm in. I'll bring the camera. And the glitter. >:-)

So, we're going to cover him in glitter? Is this the 21st-century version of tarring and feathering? Because if so, I approve. With any luck, someone will confuse him for a sparklepire.
-
Well that was infuriating. I love how some people believe that doing stuff like this actually works. ::)
Seriously, this guy is a douche.
-

Why punch him in the face? This guy (Hutcherson) is a 60 year old man who had his NFL career cut short because of ACL injuries, go for his knees (is what I would say if I endorsed such violence). But if you need more incentive to do what I don't endorse, he's good friends with Rush Limbaugh and was the pastor for Rush's fourth marriage.
I love* that, a three timed divorced drug addict is fit to be married, but not two loving men. They should be beaten until they're straight. I feel the Christian love.
*and by love I mean WTF???
-
Also, I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with naming your church after a pagan god.
-

Irony
The fundies don't get it
-
To be fair Mars Hill is not a religous church (that was the church from the hates religion loves Jesus vid)
In all seriousness WTF NOM this is hellish
-
Oh NOM.....go away.
Ironbite-how you got power in this day and age I'll never know.
-
For Christians of this caliber, violence is always the answer.
-
Damn straight.
Hmmmmm....wait what if this causes gays to be into BDSM or something? This requires a girl, candles, and some rope.
Ironbite-TO THE LABORATORY! *runs off with L*
-
If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go 'beat my gay out' if you know what I mean...
-
wait, i dont get it.
is the kid supposed to be beaten before or after he comes out of the closet?
if so, is a parent just assuming their kid is gay?
so all parents should beat the crap out of all kids to prevent them from being gay?
im so confused... :-[
oh wait, a guy from NOM said it? nevermind, they're fucking idiots.
-
Damn straight.
Hmmmmm....wait what if this causes gays to be into BDSM or something? This requires a girl, candles, and some rope.
Ironbite-TO THE LABORATORY! *runs off with L*
Wait! Where exactly do you plan to put those candles?!
-
So why aren't people allowed to beat fundies with belts? OH YEAH, because it's a dick thing to do to someone. Yeah, you can say whatever you want for the most part in the US, and everyone else is free to tell you to go fuck yourself.
Straight though I am, I'd LOVE to glitterbomb this douchebag, tell him to go fuck himself, and yell out "DEUS ES ENDIFFERENTE PRAE QUAM TYRANNIS!" (You'll have to translate that one yourselves ;))
-

How long do you need this list to be?

That does happen.

I'll go ahead and guess.
"God is indifferent to tyranny"?
-
DEUS ES ENDIFFERENTE PRAE QUAM TYRANNIS!
my latin is a little rusty, but i believe this translates as "please tell your pet tyrannosaurus to stop drinking all of my jesus juice"
-
It's supposed to mean that "God is no different than any other tyrant."
-
One good chop block to the legs and the fucker would never walk again... wouldn't even need pads!
*joins Ibby and L in the lab!*

That translation amuse me no end.
As for the beating the gay out of children...
Isn't it a loving, christian thing to do to advocate Child abuse...?
*Reads Bible* Ah...

I hate people who try to poison relations between the black and gay communities like this. Fuck you, NOM. Fuck you, Ken Hutcherson.
-
I'm going to need my spiked cluebat for this nutbar.

Divide and conquer, a trick as old as empire itself.
On another note, apart from the blatant homophobia here, why is corporal punishment so popular among religious fanatics? Is it purely a control thing, or is there some deeper psychological issue at work here?
-
It's a combination of many columns, so I can't even say "a little bit of column A and column B"
Aspects include:
1. The need for control
2. Psychological issues
3. Tradition. The man is the king of his household, and all within are his subjects and must follow his rule. Disobedience brings about punishment. (Also, 1.)
4. The idea that being non-violent is weak and for spineless cowards.
5. The idea that if they aren't feeling pain, it isn't discipline - parents who "only" lock kids in their rooms are weak-willed cowards who are spoiling their kids.
6. They had the same thing done to them when they were kids. They feel like they deserved it. Because if their kids don't deserve it, maybe they didn't.
7. A misinterpretation of "Thou shalt not spare the rod" (namely, "rod" in this case referring to a Shepherd's crook that is used to pull sheep onto a corrective course or save them from danger - you're not supposed to hit sheep with them, though I imagine shepherds did, in fact, do so.)
8. Instilling the literal fear of God into one's children, because Love of God is to Fear him. If they do not Fear god, then they are going to hell, and that is a bad thing.
9. Anger that is not healthily expressed.
10. Because it deserves a second mention, desire to have control. Especially in light of 6, where they did not have control, but now they do.
Corporeal punishment is the most psychologically harmful discipline out there - but science that contradicts God is Evil and of Satan. And so, they carry on harming their children for life because they think they're doing the right thing for them.
Abusers often believe they are doing what's right for the people they're abusing. "She needs to be with me, she needs to be put in her place, she needs me to run her life for her, because she can't do it herself. She needs me. And what I'm doing is good for her."
-
Of course, there are other people advocating using violence against children who may or may not even be gay: http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2012/05/nc-pastor-crack-limp-wrists-of-girlish-boys-reign-in-your-butch-daughters/

A pastor recently said pretty much exactly the same thing and pulled the usual cop-out non-apology that fundies use when they know they've been caught out:
http://pastorseansblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/important-clarification-to-sundays.htm
"No, no, I LOVE gay kids, I'm just 'tolerantly intolerant' of their god forsaken lifestyle."
Nice try jackass.

I think "love the sinner, hate the sin" is a common thing among Christians. Then again, we're talking about fundamentalist Christians.
-
Personally speaking, I find it offensive when pastors say that. In fact, I dislike it that they consider my life sinful, but that aside, the "hate the sin" part of that means that even if they like me, they hate a rather large part of my personality. While my sexuality doesn't dominate who I am, it's a sizable portion, and in fact helps define who I am. So in essence, when you say "hate the sin, love the sinner", I hear "I hate your personality and I'd like you more if you were different".

Oh it gets better. Now the idiot is comparing himself to Jesus (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/03/pastor-sean-harris-beat-gay-children-sermon_n_1474510.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003)
The North Carolina pastor whose violent anti-gay rant blew up across the blogosphere, said in an interview that his message to parents in a sermon -- to "punch" a boy who is effeminate and "crack that wrist" if he is limp-wristed -- were taken out of the "context of a ministry," and that he meant them "figuratively," claiming that Jesus, too, in the Bible, "conjures up violent images."
Pastor Sean Harris of the Barean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C. retracted the statements of violence but continued to defend his comments about the "importance of gender distinctions that God created," as well his condemnation of homosexuality, citing the Bible. But he was not able to explain other passages in the Bible, such as those condoning slavery, saying he didn't realize the interview would "slant and redirect the conversation."
"I had no idea that the video would be chopped and posted in the blogosphere in a such a manner in which the entirety isn’t understood," Harris said in an interview on my radio program on SiriusXM OutQ yesterday. "Those were not the best choice of words. If I had to do it over again again I would not choose those words. I was using hyperbole in an effort to communicate the importance of the gender distinctions that God created. I would offer an apology to anyone I have offended. I don’t make an apology for those gender distinctions that are the word of God."
Ironbite-I hate people who do that I really do.

Where in the hell did Yahweh ever say what boys and girls are supposed to like?
-
Now this guy is just psycho.
It enrages me that he's on the cross acting like some kind of martyr for speaking "the truth". No, asshole, you're being hated because what you're encouraging is fucking child abuse, hardly a noble cause.
I'm with cenk, I think this guy is a closet case. Sadly, if it weren't for bigotted beliefs like this, he'd be more comfortable with who he is and wouldn't be saying such dangerous things.
-
"importance of gender distinctions that God created,"
Would this be the same god whose "son" wore a robe and is always pictured with long hair?

This describes half the male population of New Jersey. Hell, this means there are a few Jesii right here in my home town! ;D
